Chairman David Zimmerman has called this Special County Board Meeting.
"Chairman Zimmerman asked that I send an email to all of you regarding the importance of this meeting as the County moves forward with the use of ARPA funds and developing the County campus. The discussion and input from this meeting will be utilized to make decisions for the direction Tazewell County takes." per Chief Clerk Sue Beeney.
Last fall, the rumors that the historic court house in Pekin was going to be torn down drew immediate outrage. Even though no one on the Tazewell County Board released any documentation regarding the plan, the rumors included spending $35Million on a replacement court house, $10Million more than the windfall money the county would receive from the COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Tazewell County citizens were furious about the possibility of losing such an historic building. Likewise they were furious that receiving $25Million from the federal government would not reduce the ongoing cost of the county government but would add at least another $10Million debt.
Months later, no written plan detailing what the "County campus" means has been provided by our county officials. The current rumors are different, but still include demolition of other historic buildings and spending more than the ARPA windfall.
Concerned citizens might want to attend.
